Configuring time-of-day synchronization of the IE/PB LINK PN IO V3
The requirement is that the time of day is made available by a node on the relevant network.
Procedure for time-of-day synchronization
The following methods can be selected with various options:
-
SIMATIC mode
If the SIMATIC mode is enabled, the LINK sets its time-of-day according to MMS time-of-day messages (MMS ‑ Manufacturing Message Specifaction).
The MMS time-of-day messages originate from a SIMATIC time transmitter or a CPU configured as time master. The time-of-day messages can be received by the CP either from the local CPU or via a LAN. You can set whether and in which direction the LINK will forward the time-of-day frames.
The advantage of the SIMATIC mode is that it is generally more accurate than the NTP mode.
-
NTP method
(NTP ‑ Network Time Protocol)
With the NTP method, the LINK sets its time according to time-of-day messages originating from an NTP server and made available by a node on the Ethernet network. You can set whether the LINK simply adopts the time-of-day frames from the LAN or adopts it and forwards them.
In NTP mode, it is generally UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) that is transferred. This corresponds to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
The advantage of NTP mode is that it allows the time to be synchronized across subnets.
Configuring time-of-day synchronization
Meaning of the options:
-
Use SIMATIC method - forward from Ethernet to PROFIBUS
The LINK adopts the time of day from the LAN and forwards it to the PROFIBUS network.
-
Use SIMATIC method - forward from PROFIBUS to Ethernet
The LINK adopts the time of day from the PROFUBUS network and forwards it to the LAN.
-
SIMATIC method - take time of day from the Ethernet network
The LINK adopts the time of day from the LAN but does not forward it.
-
SIMATIC method - take time of day from the PROFIBUS network
The LINK adopts the time of day from the PROFIBUS network but does not forward it.
-
Use NTP method - forward from Ethernet to PROFIBUS
The LINK adopts the time of day from the LAN and forwards it to the PROFIBUS network.
-
NTP method - take time of day from the Ethernet network
The LINK adopts the time of day from the LAN but does not forward it.
